Some years ago I purchased an album of slides from an online auction. They were all of steam locos, and I presumed they would be Colour-Slide copies. There was very little information given, except that they were from a house clearance.
When they arrived, there were none with any copyright details and most had nothing on the mounts at all. On closer inspection they were very dusty and the transparencies were mounted between very thin sheets of glass. A lot of trouble to go to for copies.
As I scanned them, I gained the distinct feeling they had appeared in books or magazines. I have no idea who took the photos, or if the ones I now have are actually originals.
There are no notes for this image, but it is Castle class 7007 ‘Great Western’ on the up Cathedrals Express. I have no idea of the date, but it is Autumn and cannot be later than 1962 as 7007 was withdrawn in February 1963.
I do have details for this but it seems incorrect; Royal Scot 46160 ‘Queen Victoria’s Rifleman picks up water on Castle Troughs, 30th August 1963. However, I’m not sure any Scots sported the ‘cycling lion’ BR emblem by then.
Princess Royal 46208 ‘Princess Helena Victoria’ is in poor external condition, but it was stored early in 1961 before reinstatement in July.
Coronation pacific 46227 ‘Duchess Of Devonshire’ climbs through the Westmoreland hills.
I’m sure this photo was in Railway World many decades ago. 48689 battles up towards Buxton with a long mineral train.
A3 pacific 60055 ‘Woolwinder’ passes Gateshead in the early 60s.
