I have a number of negatives from the electrified line between Sheffield and Manchester. They are of various quality and extend to Wath and Rotherwood in the east.
76021 is at Guide Bridge alongside class 506 EMU M59402M (with 59502 and 59602) in 1977.
A class 100 DMU is seen near Mottram in 1971. These units were constructed by the Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon company at their works to the SW of Barnwood locomotive depoot. This is one of the first batch, denoted by the lamp above the driver’s cab.
E26054 tows E26052 and a brake van near Mottram in 1971. A number of these class 76s had the letter E added before the number as the 25kv locomotives did, although in the case of the former there was no number class with diesels.
08687 is an interesting shunter, because according to all contemporary accounts it was named ‘Ashburys Tom’ in 1974; but in this view at Guide Bridge from October 12th 1978 I can’t see any evidence of a name. After the closure of the Woodhead route, it moved to Cricklewood. In the late 1980s it was renumbrered 08995 and named ‘Kidwelly’ after transfer to South Wales, and is now preserved on the BP&GVR in West Wales.
This is from one of a number of HC Casserley negatives I bought when his collection was sold by auction some years ago. I would have liked more, but many lots went for silly prices. Here E27006 ‘Pandora’ leaves Guide Bridge with a Manchester London Road to Sheffield Victoria passenger service on September 2nd 1955. The SE&CR coach S644S is a rather unusual vehicle on this service at the time.
EE type 4 1-Co-Co-1 40134 is seen near Godley on September 2nd 1976.
One of the disadvantages of non-SLR cameras was you could not see if your thumb was close to the lens. E26019 has charge of a coal train passing Guide Bridge junction on June 8th 1968.
An unusual view from the footbridge at Dinting station, as a 76 brings another coal train for Fiddlers Ferry power station along the Woodhead route in the late 1970s.
The usual weekend lineup at Wath depot. This is July 30th 1978, and included are 76001/30/16/03 /06/21.
An EM1 approaches Sheffield Victoria with a freight train from the Manchester direction during 1968.
26048 approaches Dunford Bridge in 1969, with a train for Manchester.
EM1 26000 has been attached to B1 4-6-0 at Wombwell, and are ready to work the High Peak railtour to Guide Bridge on June 27th 1964. This tour included a full trip on the C&HPR between Buxton and High Peak Junction.
76012 heads west with a loaded steel train in summer 1977.
Wath again, with 37136 and 37209 among the locos stabled at the depot on January 8th 1977.
A number of 76s were often stabled at Orgreave sidings. Here 76047 and 76011 can be seen, between cross Pennine workings on September 30th 1978.
Another stabling area was Beighton/Rotherwood, where 76021 and 76014 can be seen on July 1st 1977. Handy for a bit of shopping.
In the mid 1950s, K2 2-6-0 61778 arrives at Sheffield Victoria with a train from Cleethorpes. If this service was for Manchester, it is likely that an EM2 locomotive was waiting to take over.
