However, being hidden in a cupboard until they fade to nothing, is a poor life for such evocative photos; so here they are.
1011 ‘County Of Chester’ appears to be on a rather mundane stopping train service at Didcot in September 1960.
Churchward designed 2-6-2T 4564 is seen passing Carbis Bay with a St Erth to St Ives service on 21st September 1960. The loco had only 3 more months of Cornish relaxation to go, as it would be transferred to Shrewsbury that December.
Castle Class 5053 ‘Earl Cairns’ climbs Dainton Bank, between Newton Abbot and Totnes, with a summer extra service 1Z84 on Thursday 21st July 1960.
Another Castle, 5099 ‘Compton Castle’ is racing along in fine style near Twyford with the Capitals United Express from Cardiff to Paddington on the 30th April 1960.
King Class 6026 ‘King John’ brings the up Cambrian Coast Express into Birmingham Snow Hill station on 12th November 1960.
One of the BR built Castles, 7032 ‘Denbigh Castle was only just over 10 years old when photographed heading west through Ealing on 5th November 1960. Despite it’s relative youthfulness, it had less than 4 years to go; with the almost criminal rush to eliminate steam about to commence. (As always it was the taxpayer who would foot the bill for this waste of resources).
King class 4-6-0 6002 ‘King William IV’ passes Starcross station and the Exe Estuary with a westbound express on June 28th 1959. I would add a copyright note if I knew who the photographer might have been, but there is nothing on the image notes.
