Great Eastern

This the photo page for images from East Anglia; from my collection which I have acquired of the last couple of decades. I hope you enjoy them. They will be in no particular order, because I will add the latest random scans to the top of the page. Some will be of dubious quality, as most were taken by trainspotters with simple cameras (although I have tried to improve the images with modern computer techniques).

On a misty June day in 1951, newly introduced Standard 5MT 4-6-0 73000, just 2 months old, is seen at Cambridge with a rather mixed rake of passenger stock on a stopping train (possibly to Bletchley) in June 1951. A few steam leaks seem to have become apparent. 172 of this class were constructed between 1951 and 1957.

Britannia pacific 70036 ‘Boadicea’ is passing Colchester with a Norwich to Liverpool Street service on September 5th 1959.

I am informed that this is Ashdon Halt on the line from Saffron Walden to Bartlow.

A rather curiously exposed shot of J52 0-0

Britannia pacific 4-6-2 70013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’ passes Ingatestone with a Norwich train in 1959.

June 20th 1950, and J20 0-6-0 no 64684 leaves Cambridge with a train for Bury St Edmunds. Note the express passenger lamps.

D16 4-4-0 62544 is at Yarmouth South Town in 1956. The locomotive was withdrawn late in 1959.

Holden J67 0-6-0T 68499 is at South Lynn in 1955, with sister loco 68490 behind. Note the differences in chimneys and safety valve covers between the two locomotives.

Thompson L1 2-6-4T 67787 is seen working a Cambridge to Ipswich local service on June 10th 1950.

Not the best quality, but this is D16 4-4-0 62546 ‘Claud Hamilton’ at Ipswich on June 25th 1949.

Metro-Cammell 2-car DMU is seen heading for Kings Lynn in the late 1950s. The negative details simply say ‘near Kings Lynn’. The leading car is E79068.

Thompson B1 4-6-0 61301 is seen on a stopping passenger service in the mid-1950s. Judging by the coaching stock, this would probably be 1953 or 1954, and as 61301 was a Cambridge engine; I presume the location will be somewhere in that area.

Another B1 4-6-0, 61361 passes Stratford circa 1956 with a train of non-vestibule coaches in the mid 1950s. Most of the negatives have no accompanying details at all, so please feel free to correct errors.
